1. Statutory sizes for motorcycle plates (§ 10 & Anlage 4 FZV)

For motorcycles, Anlage 4 Abschnitt 2 Nr. 2a of the Fahrzeug-Zulassungsverordnung (FZV, the German vehicle registration ordinance) prescribes a two-line motorcycle plate with a height of 200 mm and a width of 180 mm, 200 mm or 220 mm. By law, a motorcycle always requires exactly 1 license plate (for the rear of the vehicle).

  • 180 × 200 mm: the most popular compact standard size for up to 4 characters in the lower line
  • 200 × 200 mm & 220 × 200 mm: for longer combinations or combinations with a season period / E / H
  • 255 × 130 mm (or 240 × 130 mm): reduced-size two-line plate for light motorcycles (125 cc) and agricultural tractors

2. Do motorcycles need a green emissions sticker?

No. Under Anhang 3 zu § 2 Abs. 3 of the 35. BImSchV (the German vehicle labelling ordinance), two- and three-wheeled motor vehicles (motorcycles, scooters, light motorcycles and quads) are generally exempt from the emissions sticker requirement in German low-emission zones.
